"Reality, to me, is not something that you perceive, but something you make. You create it more rapidly than it creates you."

The official website for the movie "A Scanner Darkly", adaptation from the same titled Philip Dick novel, has been unveiled. Visit the mysterious life of the truth and reality here.

"Any given man sees only a tiny portion of the total truth, and very often, in fact almost perpetually, he deliberatley deceives himself about the little precious fragment as well. A portion of him turns against him and acts like another person, defeating him from inside."

PA Supreme Court Allows Use Of Computer Animation

News From AWN:

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has ruled that prosecutors may use computer animation to illustrate their murder case, but the animation has to be relevant and must authentically depict the crime scene, reports THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER.

On April 25, 2006, the court said that the animation was handled properly in the case of Michael Serge, 60, a retired Scranton police detective who shot and killed his estranged wife. Serge claimed that she had attacked him with a knife and was too intoxicated to have intended to kill her. He is now serving a life sentence.

The court said judges must weigh animation's probative value (its ability to help prove a case) against any unfair harm it might cause the defendant.

"The legal system must adapt," Justice Sandra Schultz Newman wrote for the majority. "Courts are facing the need to shed any technophobia and become more willing to embrace the advances that have the ability to enhance the efficacy of the legal system."

to Offer 24/7 Streaming Episodes of Top-Rated Series

Toonami Jetstream to be Exclusive U.S. Broadband Home to Series Naruto, Samurai Jack, Hikaru no Go,

San Francisco, CA, April 25, 2006 — Cartoon Network and VIZ Media announced a joint venture called Toonami Jetstream, a new broadband service that will provide on-demand, full-length streaming episodes of a number of hit animé and action series, including acclaimed hit series Naruto and Samurai Jack. In addition, users will also be able to watch full-length episodes of series like Hikaru No Go, MÄR and The Prince of Tennis that are not currently offered on U.S. broadcast or basic cable television. In this joint venture, Cartoon Network and VIZ Media will jointly manage and administer acquisitions and programming.

Toonami Jetstream (available at www.ToonamiJetstream.com) will launch on July 17. Each week, new episodes will be added to the site while previous episodes will also be available through the Toonami Jetstream archive. Toonami Jetstream, an online extension of Cartoon Network's long-running and successful Toonami action-adventure television franchise, is a free service, supported by advertising that includes both banners and streaming video ads.

"Cartoon Network has long been the dominant TV provider of the best animé and action," said Paul Condolora, senior vice president and general manager of Cartoon Network New Media. "And we were the first to stream, in 2001, full-length animé series online. Now, with this joint venture with VIZ Media, we will give our fans the chance to view popular shows on-demand and follow new series that cannot be seen anywhere else. We also believe this will bring new fans to the action/animé genre, create interest in new shows and build the overall popularity of Toonami on Cartoon Network."

  Learn More About Them

If you would like to know more about Over The Hedge, and the inspirations of producers, Dreamworks Animation has published an inside interview with Bonni, Tim and Kerry, the producers of the animated movie.

"...And you never really know when or where that’s going to happen. In 1985, when I was doing drawn animation in Chicago, I shared a cab on a rainy day with a guy who happened to own a post production facility that had just purchased a very early computer animation system. He needed some help getting it up and running, and I ended up spending about a week doing just that, after which he offered me a job. To the astonishment of all my friends in the animation community, I accepted it. It was a big leap, but I just had this scary little instinct, and it turned out to be the right one..."

iStopMotion 1.9.2: RAW fun

Munich, Germany - April 19th, 2006. RAW is all the vogue these days and iStopMotion, the well known stop motion animation package, makes no exception: Version 1.9.2 now imports all kinds of images from your local harddisk, including RAW images. For the users, this means new creative possibilities.

Import Menu Command

Create movies from images that already exist, that you have scanned in or produced with an application that only creates sequences of images with the new, convenient "Import Images from Disk" command. Or export all frames of an animation, batch process them with a tool like GraphicConverter and re-import them into a movie. You could also use this export-import routine to change the frame rate of a time lapse movie.

The RAW file format, because it is uncompressed and unprocessed when a picture is taken with a digital still camera that supports it, is the format of choice for serious photographers. With iStopMotion 1.9.2 you can use these files for time lapse movies or stop motion animation.

Flipbook printing and Universal Application

With Flipbook printing, which was introduced with version 1.9, kids can print out their animation and take it home to show it to friends and family in an easy and inexpensive way. iStopMotion is a Universal Application since version 1.9, introduced in January 2006 and has been tested on all shipping Intel based Macs.

Availablity and Pricing

The Boinx iStopMotion 1.9.2 update is available for download immediately from the website http://www.istopmotion.com. The update is free for all current owners of a valid iStopMotion 1.x license. New license keys are on sale via Kagi for US $39.95 for the DV version and US $349 for the HR version. A five day demo license for evaluation can be requested at the website..."

Animated Film with Elton John Music Rescued by Disney Records

"Executives of Walt Disney Records intervened on behalf of the Elton John animated film project Gnomeo and Juliet after it was canceled by Pixar execs John Lasseter and Ed Catmull -- and their efforts resulted in reviving the project at Disney's Miramax unit, Disney watcher Jim Hill reported on his website jimhillmedia.com Thursday. The music company executives pointed out that they had expected huge CD sales from the soundtrack, which was to have included new Elton John tunes with classic ones. Hill also observed that in order to assure Lasseter and Catmull that they were not being overridden, Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook told them that the Miramax film would be aimed principally at adults, would be edgier than Disney's usual cartoons, and would include songs like John's "The Bitch Is Back," which couldn't be included in a G-rated movie."

  Captain Marvel To The Resque!!

"With Sony’s
Spider-Man 3 and Warner Bros. eagerly awaited Superman Returns poised to set the box office on fire, New Line is hoping to erect its own superhero tentpole with Shazam!, a screen adaptation of DC Comics’ Captain Marvel franchise. Hired to helm the pic is Peter Segal, who has been making a living directing such Adam Sandler hits as The Longest Yard, 50 First Dates and Anger Management. In the comics, a young boy named Billy Batson shouts the magic word "Shazam!" and gets an instant puberty boost, becoming Captain Marvel, an adult superhero with the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Aries, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury. The comic-book favorite was serialized on screen in 1941 with The Adventures of Captain Marvel and was resurrected for television with the 1974 series, Shazam! This latest attempt to breathe new life into the franchise has been a long time in the making. Scribes attached to the project include Oscar-winner William Goldman (All the President’s Men, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) and Bryan Goluboff (The Basketball Diaries). Shazam! is being produced New Line exec Chris Godscik and Michael Euslan (Constantine), while Mark Kaufman and Daryl Friemark oversee for New Line. In addition to directing, Segal will assume producer duties, along with his Callahan Filmworks partner, Michael Ewing. Segal is also set to direct a feature film version of the classic Don Adams spy spoof TV series Get Smart for Warner Bros. "

I Have No Further Questions, Your Honour...

In a study of 117 undergraduate students, psychologists discovered that movements in a sequence of events, as well as the duration portrayed, in animations such as re-creations of a crime can double an already troubling hindsight bias.

Hindsight bias has been linked to the traditional use of text and diagrams to re-create crimes, and is known to interfere with the ability to make fair decisions because it often leads jurists to exaggerate the predictability of past events.

"Many lawyers assume that computer video animations help clarify the evidence, and, therefore, help jury decisions to be fairer and more closely grounded in the facts," said Neal J. Roese, a professor of psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "Our findings indicate instead that a computer animation introduces its own additional bias, making people more punitive and more likely to hand out harsh penalties."

Roese and colleagues suggest that by viewing a computer-animated re-creation of an event, a person's confidence is heightened -- but not necessarily accurately. An animation, they say, provides movement as reconstructed by a prosecution, plaintiff or defense witness to reconfirm or heighten a jurist's hindsight feeling that "I knew it all along."
